To enable buoyancy and structural stability, specialized floatation devices are employed, serving as the mechanical support framework for the solar modules positioned above the water.
How Does a Floating Solar Panel Work?
Floating solar panels are designed much like traditional ones, but instead of being placed on land, they sit on water using strong floating platforms. Since a single panel can weigh around 28 kg, the supporting structures must be durable and reliable.
The panels generate direct current (DC) electricity, which is then converted into alternating current (AC) by inverters — making it usable for homes and industries.
To keep everything secure, the platforms are anchored either to the bottom of the water body or connected to the shore with floating power lines. The anchoring system depends on several factors such as water depth, soil type, changes in water level, buoyancy design, and wind conditions.
In short, floating solar combines proven solar technology with smart engineering to harness clean energy from water surfaces without taking up valuable land space.
Advantages of Floating Solar Systems
There are several advantages of floating solar systems compared to those mounted on rooftops.
Minimal Soil Consumption
Floating solar panels are placed on water and therefore do not consume soil by nature, except for those used to connect to the public electrical network.
Saves Water
In areas dominated by the systems (coverage is, however, partial), evaporation of the underlying water is limited by up to 80%. In sites intended for irrigation or human consumption, it is possible to save significant amounts of water depending on the percentage of coverage of the basin and the atmospheric temperature.
High Efficiency
The performance of floating solar panels is higher than systems installed on land, attributed to the reduced operating temperature of the solar modules due to the natural cooling of the water. Installed in large water bodies, these systems also see less dust deposition, which increases the plant's energy production.
Low Maintenance
The solar panels on water do not need frequent cleaning. In the air's free surface, dust is reduced compared to the mainland, since most of the dust lifted by the wind from the ground near water bodies cannot exceed the water's edge.
Cheap Solar Tracking & Cooling
Compared to ground-based systems, the presence of water makes it easy to install solar tracking and panel cooling systems. This can increase energy output by 20% for solar tracking and 10% for cooling.
